ARTIST’S
STATEMENT
Mary Joy Stone is a realist in a sense, not that she tries to capture
the exact nature of a place, but rather a memory of it that evokes
a suppressed emotional response to a deja vu experience of being there
before. She takes that emotional approach to capture the illusion of
color and shape. Painting the southwestern landscape covers the full
realm of her emotions. The morning light exudes a crisp and clear calmness.
By afternoon she is vibrantly energetic. With evening comes a peacefulness,
a satisfaction as the orange light casts a warm glow over everything.
She paints from her own sketches or photos so that she can use her
artistic license to arrange and edit in order to create that magic
moment where the viewer will say, “Yes, I’ve been there,
done that, and it is just as I remember.”
